Sunday: Beer before lunch

or how one thing leads to another…

The other day, Sunday, we decided to run some of our weekly errands at Commercial drive here in Vancouver. Particularly, we had to get some produce and other groceries. After brunch we skytrained out to Commercial & Broadway where we got off to stroll on a sunny day North along Commercial Drive’s many appealing store fronts. As we picked up one or the other necessity here and there on the way, we eventually happened to walk past Granview park. And for those who know the area, on the North end of Granview park, just past William Street, that is where the “Tap and Tapas” bar called Biercraft is located.

After all this strolling, both of us fell the need to seek out the little girl’s and boy’s room. And of course, we weren't far away from asking each other “feeling like a little beer?” (or better “cervecita” - for little beer as we call it in Spanglish). Long story short, two minutes later we sat inside the bar on a little table overlooking the ongoings outside on Commercial Drive, with a menu in front of us with plenty of beers to choose from, with some local as well as other beers from further away.

Both of us assembled a taster flight that seemingly aligned with one or the other’s taste preference. My wife Amaia selected the Storm Pineapple Pilsner, Parallel 49 Radler and the Ode de Citra Pale Ale from Powell St. where I chose Strange Fellows Nocturnum, Steel & Oak IPA and the Backcountry IPA. Turned out that for the fourth beer, we both ended-up choosing the Oat Porter from Four Winds, that’s the one with Lactose as the secret ingredient.

Now, we enjoyed all beers but the Lactose Porter definitely conveys a smooth and creamy finish. It was preserved and left un-touched on either’s flight so that we could enjoy it as the “desert”(it’s Sunday after all). Needless to say that this is also makes it the favourite brew of this day & article. And this concludes the story of how a planned shopping trip can lead to an unexpected taste experience :).
